This is primarily due to the fact that this earthquake occurred at quite a significant depth, rendering it ineffectual. This event is located just 11 km north-east of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that occurred on 29 March 1954. Parameters provided by EMSC Click here to view a location map and seismicity of the region. Issued 8 March 2010 SEISMIC ALERT: MAULE, OFFSHORE CHILE 27 FEBRUARY 2010 06:34 UTC 8.8 MW The following preliminary information is available for this earthquake: DATE : 27 February 2010 The earthquake occurred on the boundary between the South American and Nazca tectonic plates. The Nazca plate is moving east at around 8 cm/year and is being subducted down beneath the South American plate, resulting in thrust earthquakes along the boundary between the two. This earthquake fills in an identified seismic gap - no previous large earthquake had occurred in this area since 1835, when a large earthquake was observed by Charles Darwin. Since then, an estimated 10 metres of potential displacement has accumulated on this segment of the plate boundary. Chile has a long history of very large earthquakes, and the epicentre lies around 400 km northeast of the magnitude 9.5 earthquake that struck Chile in 1960. This was the largest earthquake ever recorded and resulted in a destructive tsunami that killed over one thousand of people in Chile and travelled as far as Hawaii and Japan where some hundreds of people were killed. Latest reports indicate that around 800 people have been killed, however, this total may rise as communications in the region are limited. A tsunami warning had been expanded to Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica but has since been cancelled. (Source: Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre). A 1.3 m tsunami wave was observed at Valparaiso, 200km north of the epicentre about 20 minutes after the earthquake. The sustained sequence of large aftershocks has hampered rescue attempts of those injured and caused further damage to buildings.
